Solent 2 30, Shorwell 5 9

Solent 2 played some good netball in freezing conditions against a youthful Shorwell 5 team. Solent took an early lead right from the first whistle and quickly took control of the game and extended their lead each quarter. The Solent defence of Jan Gilham, Montana Booth and Aimee Smart kept the Shorwell shooters away from the post, making it difficult for them to score. The Solent attack of Sioni Barnes and Kerry Makepeace fed their shooters well and some accurate shooting by Jess Cleary and Linda Morris secured the victory. Solent player of the match was Aimee Smart for her excellent interceptions throughout the match.

Solent 3 26, Gurnard 2 20

Solent came from behind to secure their first win of the season.
In icy cold and, at one point, snowy conditions, the Ryde team found themselves behind at the end of the first quarter after some accurate shooting from the Gurnard attack.
Solent found their feet early on in the second period and a succession of pressing attacks led to a flurry of goals.
In one of her first full senior matches, player of the match Charley Makepeace worked hard and linked up well with Solent’s shooters Lucy Archer and Lorraine Parker.
Making the most of Solent’s obvious height advantage in the shooting circle, the youngster played many accurate high balls into goal shooter Lorraine.
This technique and some solid defensive work from goal defence Mandy Price and goalkeeper Jo Brown helped Solent extend their lead.
In the final quarter, Gurnard managed to reduce what was at one point a ten-goal deficit but Solent showed resilience and stayed focused for the win.

Solent 1 33, Shanklin 18

Solent decided that folowing their defeat the previous week they were not going to rush things but play steady to secure a win. Thoughout the game, Solent tried and tested various tactical plays and had a more settled game. Player of match: Stacey Grimes

Solent 2 v Ladybirds

Solent matched Ladybirds in their game play but Ladybirds showed their strength after playing the previous season in the 1st Division. The youngsters in Solents 2nd team at times found the physical side of the game hard but did not let it get them down and coped maturely with the challenge. Unfortunately the 2nd team lost their first match this season and just missed out on a point. Player of match Montana Booth.

 Solent 3 v Shorwell 5

The 3rd team only had 6 players due to a mix up over player availabilty and also had 14yr old Charley Makepeace playing her first senior league match, Charley found the game very different to the juniors and she started very timidly, but as the match progressed you could she was starting to gain in confidence. Jo Brown in defence had a good game making many interceptions and turning it in to attack, they were missing their regular shooter therefore missing out on Lorraine’s added height in the shooting circle, Alice McGowan never gave up from start to finish and she deserved getting player of the match.

Solent 1 33, Shorwell 2 48

Shorwell got off to a good start in the first quarter but Solent fought back to be within 5 goals of their score at half time. Shorwell’s shooter had a good game hardly missing once she had the ball. Solent did not play their usual game, making silly and basic mistakes throughout the court and not playing to their strengths. The team was still missing the experience of Belinda. Now in hindsight Solent know what they should do for the return match in the second half of the season. Player of the match was Jeannie Stone.

Solent 1 49, Gurnard 1 25

Despite some inconsistent play, Solent managed to maintain their lead against Gurnard 1 in the first match of the season. In poor conditions, Solent allowed Gurnard to make a comeback early on but the Ryde team managed to capitalise on their lead for a convincing win.

Stacey Grimes returned to the team after having a baby but an injury in training kept her from playing her normal game.  Jeannie Stone also returned to play a steady game with some good feeds into the shooters.

Shooter Katia Siska, who was promoted to the first team this season, is gaining in experience and played well alongisde Kelly Ross. Belinda Rockall missed the first game and was replaced by Sioni Barnes.

Having played half a match for the second team earlier in the day, Sioni played well at wing attack. Player coach Chris Grimes had her usual steady game, calling and directing her defence to successfully shut out Gurnard’s attack.

Player of the match, Carly Marshall had an excellent game and won many interceptions, forcing Gurnard to hesitate in their attack.
